Chelimo continues momentum with 2nd place in Boston Marathon

The ’17 Boston Marathon once again featured a world-class international women’s field, including two-time IAAF world marathon champion Edna Kiplagat (2:19:50 personal best, ’12 London), course record holder Buzunesh Deba (2:19:59 personal best, ’14 Boston), and IAAF world half marathon champion Gladys Cherono (2:19:25 personal best, ’15 Berlin).  In her race debut on American soil, Rose Chelimo held her own and was in the lead group of eight that passed the halfway point in 1:12:33.  While Chelimo remained in the lead group of five that passed 30 km in 1:42:40, Kiplagat shortly thereafter broke away from her challengers and went on to win in a time of 2:21:52.  Behind Kiplagat, it was a tight race for the remaining podium spots between Chelimo and American marathon debutant Jordan Hasay, with Chelimo holding on to finish 2nd in 2:22:51 vs. Hasay’s 2:23:00.  While the time is Chelimo’s fastest over the marathon distance, the point-to-point course and net elevation drop of 450 ft (137 m) make the race results uncertified by IAAF standards.  The Boston result extends the streak of successful performances over the past year by the versatile Chelimo, including the ’16 Rio Olympic Games Marathon (8th), ’16 Seoul Marathon (1st), ’16 Valencia Half Marathon (3rd), ’17 Ras Al Khaimah Half Marathon (7th), and ’17 IAAF World Cross Country Championships (9th).
